Dear Tara,
A few hours ago, the news broke that Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has been selected by Sen. John McCain as the vice presidential candidate for the Republican ticket. As a Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund supporter, you are no doubt aware of Governor Palin’s dismal record, from her staunch support for special interests and Big Oil to her terrible assault on wolves and other wildlife. As much of the nation wonders just who Sarah Palin is, I wanted to pass along my statement that I’ve just released. Please read it and pass it along to everyone you know. Thanks for your continued support,
Rodger FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 29, 2008 Shocking Choice by John McCain
WASHINGTON– Senator John McCain just announced his choice for running mate: Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska. To follow is a statement by Rodger Schlickeisen, president of Defenders of Wildlife Action Fu nd.
“Senator McCain’s choice for a running mate is beyond belief. By choosing Sarah Palin, McCain has clearly made a decision to continue the Bush legacy of destructive environmental policies. “Sarah Palin, whose husband works for BP (formerly British Petroleum), has repeatedly put special interests first when it comes to the environment. In her scant two years as governor, she has lobbied aggressively to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling, pushed for more drilling off of Alaska’s coasts, and put special interests above science. Ms. Palin has made it clear through her actions that she is unwilling to do even as much as the Bush administration to address the impacts of global warming. Her most recent effort has been to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to remove the polar bear from the endangered species list, putting Big Oil before sound science. As unbelievable as this may sound, this actually puts her to the right of the Bush administration. “This is Senator McCain’s first significant choice in building his executive team and it’s a bad one. It has to raise serious doubts in the minds of voters about John McCain’s commitment to conservation, to addressing the impacts of global warming and to ensuring our country ends its dependency on oil.” ###
The Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund (www.defendersactionfund.org) provides a powerful voice in Washington to Americans who value our conservation heritage. Through grassroots lobbying, issue advocacy and political campaigns, the Action Fund champions those laws and lawmakers that protect wildlife and wild places while working against those that do them harm.
I sent this e-mail on into cyberspace in a meager attempt to pass on knowledge. What happened, was it hit a little closer to home than I imagined. Thus ensues the banter between my father and I:
Hi Em,
Thanks for the info
I think the choice for Sarah Palin is a great one and I’ll tell you why.
She is for America being independent of foreign oil. These countries do not like us and we are supporting them while damaging ourselves
Nature is resilient, it has been proven in the past that it can and will rebound. Alternative fuels will not happen over night. with the federal government lifting bans on offshore drilling with conditions we have a chance to buy time to develope these alternatives, I think we can compromise.
I personally think our energy needs are worth the sacrifice of a few polar bears, if that is even the case. The oil industry is not the major polluter it was a few decades ago, to think that they will go and strip the environment unbridled is ridiculous, everybody knows that.
This is just a scare tactic used by organizations (Democrats) trying to justify their positions, it does the American people no good… if we follow their rhetoric, we allow ourselves to go deeper into the clutches of foreign governments… that scares me worse than ”losing” nature, which would never happen anyway.
The speaker of the House, Nancy Peloski, has shares in companies involved with alternative fuel research… can you see why she might not want offshore drilling?
Oh by the way… I love you.
—
Well, Dad. . .
I didn’t know you were going to vote McCain. (winks) Even if what you say were true about the Democrats using this as a “scare tactic to defend their positions,” I think that it is nothing in comparison to the scare tactics the Republicans have used to justify going to war. Not to mention that McCain choosing a woman as a vice president is such an obvious and cheap ploy to skirt the real issues. By the way, I had no idea that off-shore drilling would dramatically decrease the cost at the pump (which seems to be the majority of Americans soul interest). And, I wonder if your stance on the sacrificing a few polar bears for “the (doomed) cause” is a mere libertarian view or just an ignorant way of saying “Hey, what good are they anyway?” Nature is resilient, there is no doubt. Polar Bears may or may not survive. As we have learned about any otherextinct species, once they are wiped off the face of the earth there is no chance of them returning. Nature will forge forward and flourish, as it has the ability to take an imbalance or missing link and adapt. We seem to love this stance of “sacrifice a few to save many.” This helps justify the destruction of species of plants, animals, and even the elimination of Human cultures. Somehow this “greater good” theory seems to be a little short of compassion. The greater good for the few but, not the majority. I just have one question: Who are the few? Because I know it isn’t you and I saving a few cents at the pump. Love you too Em —-
Well Em…
I didn’t know you were a liberal (winks) I agree with you on the war but at the same time I believe that we need to continue our assault on terrorism. I would think you as a young woman would be thrilled to see a woman on the ticket, regardless of her politics. It is political to say the least, but if you have read my latest post, you’ll agree that everything being done by the candidates is political… they are, after all… trying to get votes. I believe in the next few weeks you will see the issues come into play, but I do not think personal attacks on ones family is taking the high road, shame on the Democrats for that one. By the way, why don’t we take this conversation to my blog? I’d love to share it with others… I love you, and this is fun for me. |

Nader stood for principles and was your man maybe but the issues of wildlife are very important but it would be simpler and perhaps more effective to concentrate on the banning of Harry Potter in the Wasilla Public Library to reach the greatest # of hearts and minds?

Well, Dad. .. I was a few steps ahead of you. And hey, great minds think alike.
To continue . . .
This so called “assault on terrorism” is as bunk as the “war on drugs.” The theory with the war on drugs being that the government doesn’t want you to buy your drugs from the corner thug tax free, they want you to get them in a nicely wrapped package at the corner drugstore where they give them fancy new names like: prozac or xanax. The “war on terrorism” is a broad and manipulative term. Do I want the United States to be attacked by religious radicals? NO. However, I don’t want it to be run by religious fanatics either. I am reminded of Spanish train that was bombed and all the innocent people who suffered. When the Spanish pulled out their support for the war in Iraq they never were attacked again. Not to mention the examples IRA terrorism in England up until the early 90’s. As soon as England aborted the occupation in Northern Ireland, the attacks subsided. These are two examples of backing down and being safe.
As to being a young woman thrilled at seeing another woman “get the ticket” regardless of her politics, I digress. I could care less if the candidate is black, white, female, male or any other superlative that aims to grab attention away from real issues. Not that the involvement of such things in the years politics hasn’t made for some much welcomed variety. All we need now is a gay candidate and then I will believe America has finally grown up.

I like these lines of attack?

First to Dummidumbwit:
There is no evidence she tried to ban books from her library, in fact… some of the books she has been alleged to have tried to ban were not even in print while she was Mayor of Wasilla. This is liberal propaganda and not fact. I read the Anne Kilkenny letter and to me it seems trite, put together by a jealous high school rival and basic heresay, if it too, was not contrived by the liberals.
and now to AGLWHE
I am not a proponent of wanton rape of our land for oil, but I think the problems of energy need to be re-analized and not held to staunch idealisms that are held in place by some who make a living out of scaring the public with terms such as “global warming” or politicians who stand to make a buck by their enforcement.
I do not think that terrorists should be given the same consideration as nationalists. These people have no loyalty except unto themselves and their warped interpretation of what their God demands they do. You cannot reason with madness, you cannot be concerned for these fanatics “rights” because you can damn well believe they don’t give two shits about yours.
The only thing they fear is power and strength; they do not want logic, they do not want to peacefully co-exist, they do not want government, they do not want democracy. They want to create chaos and to hand them an olive branch is a sign of weakness that they will turn to their advantage over time.
As for a gay candidate running for President… perhaps one already is.
peace.

Or this one, over and over again all the undecided voters can hear an attack specifically mentioning McCain by name and wonder why anyone would think he was talking about the Governor?
blue_calumet_satyr // September 11, 2008 at 6:48 pm |
Chris-
(First and Foremost) The problems of energy need to be realized. Oil is passe. I like the fact that you have brought to the table that “global warming” may be just as manipulative of a term as “the war on terrorism.” There are those who have invested in alternative energies and stand to profit. Yet, we all stand to profit in the long run. Someone is going to have to put up the money. It’s business as usual. I have strong doubts as to whether the term “global warming” is a scare tactic. Science has proven dramatic climate change over the past thirty years or so.
I don’t think terrorists and nationalists should be given the same consideration either and I don’t. Nationalists believe: “My country right or wrong!” (which is outmoded thinking isn’t it?) Patriots take a more mild stance. “We have made mistakes, lets learn from them and become stronger.” So-called “Terrorists” might as well be termed as “Nihilists ” as far as media’s scant interpretation of who these people are.
Have you ever met one of these people who supposedly believe in nothing? Have they perhaps been as manipulated as you are being? Is there any room for forgiveness? Is there a chance that it’s just a misunderstanding?
I do not support in any way, shape, or form, the defense of religious radicals. They gain power by bending law to fit their own devices. I defend freedom. Freedom encourages the right to be who you want to be WITHOUT the discouragement of someone else being exactly who they are.

In pickin Palin, John Mcain and the republican party is just trying to play another one of there dirty games…
“I would think you as a young woman would be thrilled to see a woman on the ticket, regardless of her politics. ”
Ric hit it right on the head with this comment. To be a young woman and be thrilled just because a woman is on the ticket is in a way ignorant, to actually vote for her just because shes a woman is plain stupid.
To get me thrilled, it wouldn’t be an issue of sex (or race) it would be an issue of a person who has the same views as I do or at least works torwads changes I believe in.

Ofcourse there is more involved here than gender or race…
this crisis of the economy for example.
did you know that according to Barack Obama’s tax statements he claimed in 2000-2004 he made about $225,000 a year on average. In 2005 it jumped to $1,600,000. Why? 5 years chugging along at a 1/4 mil then all of a sudden his income increases more than 6 times? In 2006 he claimed $960,000, so his income dropped a bit, but in 2007 it increased to $4,200,000! In 3 years his income increased by nearly 20 times!
And he was able to do this while George Bush was in office! He also said he would not implement his new tax plan until the economy recovered. If the economy will fix itself and we can all make millions if we only knew his secret (*wink wink*), why do we need him?

Even within the democrats we have differences, but I always opposed John McCain’s Nuclear Power positions not as an anti Nuclear Power person (which I’m neither pro nor against really) but having them installed under a administration that preaches deregulation. Now, even with the Mortgage deregulation, some democrats may have dirty hands, but Deregulation is not, has never been nor will ever be a core democratic position. It is a core position of the republicans and much hay should be made of this, it should stick and work?
dummidumbwit // September 17, 2008 at 4:46 pm |
He’s a published author, sales of Mein Kamp jumped off the scale when Hitler was Chancellor (I know never bring up Hitler, but..) As he became more prominent though his campaign, his book sales increased I would think, not the wonderful Bush economy?
chrisfiore5 // September 18, 2008 at 11:43 pm |
oh yes, the published “author”
John McCain has published 5 books and donates all of his proceeds to charity, also 24% of his yearly salary goes to charities.
Barack donated 6% of his salary last year to charity, even though it was by far his best earnings to date.

Are you two sick of the cat and mouse game you’re both involved in? (Although I could point that at the candidates – I’m talking to dummidumbwit and chrisfiore5)
I must say I have my head spinning with issues. From the crumbling of our fiancial foundations in the U.S. I find myself wondering if wearing a wedding dress and having anything that remotely resembles a wedding is irresponsible.
Of course, I had already decided not to wear a traditional dress or have the traditional wedding since, well. .. it doesn’t really mean all that much to me. Marrying the man I love and having our closest friends and family out (if they can afford it) for a gianormous party (I love that slang word) is what is important to me. I hope that the economic difficulties we are facing and have yet to face, will bring people closer and help them to realize what is truly important.
I don’t care how Obama’s salary has increased. I love McCain for his contribution to charities.
Nothing will change my vote.
I just hope all you undecided voters can close the gap before Nov. 4.

Ok, a couple of hundred, Sarah took the plane and I lent Carly a grand after I laid her off? Please, Pretty please!!!
